Water Heater Help OKC
Tankless vs. Tank Water Heaters
An honest comparison for central Oklahoma homes.
Tank heaters
Lower up-front cost, simple replacement, and gas models with a standing pilot can work during power outages. They lose some heat sitting idle and take up more space.
Tankless heaters
Heat on demand, so they don't run out during back-to-back showers and they waste less standby energy. They cost more to install, often need larger gas lines and new venting, and require periodic descaling — more often with hard water like most of the OKC metro's.
Questions to ask before switching
- Is my gas line sized for the unit's demand?
- Where will it vent, and does that need a permit?
- How often will it need descaling on my water, and who does it?
- What happens during a power outage?
The U.S. Department of Energy notes tankless units can be 24–34% more efficient for homes using 41 gallons or less of hot water a day, with smaller gains for heavy users.
